Being a writer really sucks

Standard

What sucks even more is that most of us don’t have a choice in the matter. No one wants to pick the hardest career at which to be successful. Musicians think they have it bad but someone can judge you in two and a half minutes. You can’t read 85,000 words in two and a half minutes. But I have tried to stop writing many times. I tried to convince myself that it wasn’t worth it. That all the struggles and anguish I put myself though constantly was going to make me lose my sanity- and it still might. But writing is like crack, heroin, cake and cigarettes- you can’t just stop. It is part of who you are. Your characters will drive you crazy if you don’t tell their story. They will yammer on. complain and question you while you are trying to sleep. They do not give one single shit about your problems. Being a writer is in your DNA and you cannot change it. You can deny it all you want, but that doesn’t change it. Even if I get nowhere; if I never get published “for real”; if no one gives me positive feedback on amazon.com, I can’t stop. I may take a break from time to time to let go of my frustration, but it (and “they”) will always be waiting for me to get it together again. And I will- eventually.
